August 19th & 20th, 2017

The Proving Grounds is proud to present the 2017 Blade Masters tournament! Just like previous years, this tournament is exclusively weapon combat. No gimmicks, and no side shows! We will be offering multiple weapon categories, to allow for the most variety of combat. This year will see several changes to the format from previous years, notably being: the introduction of the technical win in a match; swapping from a single day event to a 2 day event; and finally the inclusion of polearms both in unrestricted, and in it’s own category.

While we are listing all the categories we will be offering, categories may be removed if not enough participants enter their field. All those who have signed up for a category that has been removed will be notified and reimbursed. We will be offering early bird rates on all categories, which are listed below.

Rules All combat will follow these standardized rules:

• All swords used must either be Calimacil brand, or receive approval from an officiant.

• All shields used must either be Epic Armoury brand, or receive approval from an officiant.

• All combatants are required to wear protective gear on their heads that pass a minimum safety inspection. Further recommended protective gear includes gloves, a cup, and a mouth guard.

• With the exception of protective equipment, and carrying equipment for weapons (frogs, holders, scabbards, etc.) combatants may not have things attached to their being.

• Excluding helmets, protective equipment may not be made primarily of metal, and may not have metal protruding with any angles. Those unsure about their armour should seek approval from an officiant.

• Protective gear may not be used if there is significant risk of the wearer not detecting impact of a weapon. Please confirm with an officiant if you’re unsure.

Matches are decided through the following means:

  • Through reaching a point victory: by scoring 10 points, with a 3 point lead on the opponent.
  • Through a technicallity, or “tech”: by gaining a 6 point lead on the opponent.
  • Through forfeit of the opponent
  • Through disqualification of the opponent; as decided by the officials.

• Points are established by a first contact system:

First contact is established by one of the two following:

• Contact by the bladed part of a weapon or,

• Contact containing sufficient force by a blunted part of a weapon

• Any mutual hit will be decided by the referee based on location, and force.

• Combat is on an honour system. A combatant may only ever declare their self hit. A combatant suspected of not declaring their hits may receive a penalty.

• After declaration of a hit, combatants will return to their beginning position, and begin their next round.

• All combatants are to demonstrate control and show intent during combat. Any combatant that shows disregard towards the safety of the referee or opponent will receive a warning. This is left up to the discretion of the referee.

• Contact in the form of kicks, and open hand strikes are allowed in good faith. Neither type of strikes may target the head though. Grappling is also allowed in good faith, and will follow standard grappling rules. Neither striking nor grappling constitute a point, unless yielded.

Team Rules:

• Teams will compete in 1 VS. 1, 5 hit progressive match.

• Each member can only take a maximum of 5 hits per match.

• Matches will follow the same rules as standard 1 VS. 1 duels.

• Upon receiving 5 hits, the competitor will swap with a team member that has yet to compete in the match.

• Upon all members of a team being eliminated, that team has lost.

• Weapon selection will be made prior to the match, and cannot be changed after the match has started.

• Combatant order is open to selection during the match.

• Teams numbers will be decided by the team with the lowest members, per match.

Equipment Equipment can be rented from the facility day-of for standard rental rates, or bring your own approved equipment.
