The bastard sword, or a “hand and a half sword” was the multi-purpose sword of it’s time. Usable as both a one handed sword allowing for a shield or secondary weapon, and a two handed sword allowing for the use of various typical great sword techniques. The bastard sword exists in length between traditional great swords, and the shorter arming swords, allowing for a wide variety of approaches towards it’s use.
The workshop will be focusing on the basics of use for both one and two handed grip: teaching the basics of form and general striking. It will cover the basics of 4 different stances, as well as discuss several of the advantages and disadvantages of assuming any of these stances with both one or two handed grip. The workshop will be running for 6 hours total, so we recommend that all participants bring appropriate clothing, water, and a towel. We will be taking a break part way through the intensive for snacks, so please also make sure to bring food to keep your energy up!
This class will be acting as the precursor for an upcoming weekly class focusing on bastard swords, and it’s recommended that anyone aiming to join that class enroll in the intensive.
